Why Girls' Rights? Why Run?

Every girl has the right to grow up safely, go to school, and make her own decisions about her life. Yet in many parts of the world, girls face significant challenges. Zinduka is committed to ensuring that girls are protected, know their rights, and can lead self-determined lives. A particular focus of our work is in Kenya, where we collaborate with local partners to combat gender-based violence, child marriage, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).

Zinduka is a nonprofit organization based in Germany, founded in Marburg in 2016. For many years, we have been working in four regions of Kenya to protect and empower girls. We train mentors, support families, create safe spaces, and assist communities on their path toward gender equality—in a culturally sensitive and sustainable manner.

Since our founding, we have worked with over 5,000 girls on girls’ rights and successfully conducted around 40 workshops.

Who is organizing the charity run at the school?

Interested teachers organize the school races locally and receive a package from Zinduka e.V. containing templates for race cards, letters to parents, race numbers, etc. If you have any questions, you can contact Zinduka e.V. by email or phone.

How many students should participate?

Every step and every donation counts! Whether it’s a single class or an entire school taking part, we’re thrilled to have every class join in.

What resources will we receive to help us?

Who donates the money for the laps run?

Whether it’s grandparents, neighbors, parents, or local businesses—anyone who hears about the campaign is warmly invited to participate. Feel free to check out our download section for letters to parents, letters to businesses, and flyers.

If your school has a booster club, donations can first be deposited into the booster club’s account and then transferred from there to Zinduka e.V.

How many school hours are required?

That depends a bit on the number of classes participating in the run. The more participants there are, the more worthwhile it is to set aside several school periods for it (e.g., as part of a project week). Individual classes can also run during a double-period physical education class.

However, the larger the run is, the more attention and awareness it can generate for the issues of gender-based violence, child marriage, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM/C).

Do we have to stick to a specific distance or time?

No matter how long your runs are or how long they take, the most important thing is that you have fun - that’s why there are no requirements. You’re also free to decide how much to donate, and you can, of course, adjust your donation amount later.

How exactly does the charity run work?

Here’s a checklist for the specific logistics of the charity runs

On the day of the charity run itself, you can plan a group start and finish. At the start, race numbers and lap sheets will be distributed. Participants can either carry their lap sheets with them while running, and the supervisor will mark off each lap. Alternatively, lap sheets can be laid out at the start, and the supervisor or the participants can record each lap completed. Of course, you can also get creative here and count laps using other methods, such as rubber bands worn on the wrist.

At the end, the laps run can be tallied, and the total amount raised can be calculated and announced. If desired, you can run a final lap together as a group.

Depending on your resources, you can arrange for music and decorations in advance.

Are donations mandatory?

No, donations are completely voluntary. Ultimately, you decide how much to donate or whether you want to adjust your donation amount later.

Do sponsors receive a donation receipt?

For donations of €300 or more, we will issue a donation receipt. Please include your full address in the payment description.

How exactly are the donations used?

Donations are used to fulfill the association’s mission, specifically to support our work with students in Kenya. With a donation of €750, students in Kenya can participate in a 4- to 6-week program, and you’ll be supporting our work to combat gender-based violence, child marriage, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM/C).

How do you ensure that the money reaches its destination?

Zinduka e.V. has offices in both Germany and Kenya. This means that donations are not passed on through third parties but go directly to the projects in Kenya. If you’d like to know what Zinduka has already accomplished, take a look here.

What role do teachers play?

Teachers are responsible for organizing, supervising, and collecting the donations. Of course, tasks may be assigned differently, and volunteers may be enlisted to help with the school runs.
